History

Perth was founded in 1829 as the Swan River Colony, one of the few Australian settlements established by free colonists rather than as a penal colony, though Western Australia did later accept convict labour (1850–1868) to address chronic labour shortages given its isolation. The city grew slowly through the 19th century before gold rushes in the 1890s (Kalgoorlie and the Eastern Goldfields) brought a population and infrastructure boom that established Fremantle as a major port.
