Confucius Institute
Confucius Institutes are Mandarin-language and Chinese-culture centres co-hosted by a Chinese partner university and a local host institution abroad. The model has expanded since the first institute opened in 2004 and has also seen many closures since 2019; today the network is in active flux. Each branch is structured as a partnership between a specific Chinese university and a specific local university, which keeps the institute embedded in academic life in its host city.
What it does
A typical Confucius Institute branch offers Mandarin courses for adults and university students, runs HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) and HSKK testing dates for official Mandarin certification, and hosts a public cultural programme of film, calligraphy workshops, lectures and Chinese New Year events. For visa and migration audiences, the most practical services are Mandarin courses, HSK exam dates and the local point of contact for study-in-China information.
