Overview

Visa Services
Schengen-visa applications for travel to Austria and within the Schengen-mutual-representation matrix from residents of South Africa, Angola, Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe are submitted via VFS Global, the official outsourced service provider for Austrian visa intake in Southern Africa. The Austrian Visa Application Centre operated by VFS is in Pretoria, with secondary intake at Johannesburg and Cape Town; for Namibian residents, biometric capture is handled at the Pretoria VAC. Standard categories include Schengen Short-Stay 'C' visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period (tourism, family visit, business, conference, paid event, medical treatment, short-term study), Airport Transit Visa ('A' visa) for nationals whose passports require it, and the National Long-Stay 'D' visa for stays exceeding 90 days for study, employment under the Red-White-Red Card scheme (Austria's points-based skilled-migration route), Red-White-Red Card plus, EU Blue Card, family-reunification under the Austrian Aliens Police Act, and the special-cases Settlement Permit categories. Schengen-visa intake runs through the VFS Global Austrian Visa Application Centre in Pretoria, Johannesburg or Cape Town — booked through the VFS online portal at vfsglobal.com. Long-stay 'D' visa adjudication and Austrian-citizen consular services are by appointment with the Embassy directly, booked by email to pretoria-ob@bmeia.gv.at or by phone on +27 12 452 9155 during the public-counter hours (Monday to Friday, 09:00–12:00). Austrian travellers visiting Namibia on Visa on Arrival do not need any Embassy service — the application runs entirely online through the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs e-Services portal. Special Notes
Inside Namibia, Austrian travellers and resident Austrian nationals can approach the Austrian Honorary Consulate in Windhoek as the first point of contact; substantive consular casework (passport issuance, full notarial work, registry acts beyond limited honorary scope) routes through the Pretoria Embassy. Travellers planning a Namibia trip from Austria do not need any Embassy service for their Namibian entry — Austrian passport holders are on the Namibian Visa on Arrival list, application runs online through the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs portal with electronic payment of the N$1,600 fee. The Pretoria Embassy at 454A Fehrsen Street is reached from O.R. Tambo International (Johannesburg, JNB) by Gautrain to Hatfield and a short Bolt or Uber transfer to Brooklyn.
