South-East, Botswana

State guide with cities, regions, and key information.

Introduction
The South-East District is Botswana's smallest but most urbanised district, home to the capital Gaborone and the satellite town of Tlokweng on the South African border. While the district lacks the dramatic wilderness of northern Botswana, it serves as the country's administrative, economic and diplomatic centre — most international visitors pass through on their way to the Okavango Delta, Chobe or the Kalahari.

Travel Types

Safari Gateway

Gaborone's airport connects to Maun (Okavango), Kasane (Chobe) and Johannesburg — the South-East is the logistical hub for reaching Botswana's world-class safari destinations.

Urban Wildlife

Gaborone Game Reserve and Mokolodi Nature Reserve offer game viewing — zebra, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs — within the capital's metropolitan area.

Cross-Border Day Trips

Pilanesberg Game Reserve and Sun City in South Africa are accessible day trips from Gaborone via the Tlokweng border post.
