Overview
The Honorary Consulate General of Iceland in Salzburg covers western Austria and provides a local contact point for Icelandic citizens and Austrian travellers with questions about Iceland. The Embassy of Iceland in Vienna (Naglergasse 2/3/8, 1010 Wien) is Iceland's embassy in Austria and handles passports, visas, and full consular matters. The Honorary Consul General in Salzburg is Mr. Erik Eibl, in post since 2005. As an honorary consulate general, the office can authenticate documents, provide first-line guidance to Icelandic nationals in distress, and facilitate contact with the embassy in Vienna, but it does not process passports or visas. Iceland is an EEA and Schengen member — Icelandic citizens travel freely within the Schengen zone, and Austrian citizens enter Iceland without a visa for any length of stay under EEA freedom of movement. The consulate is a useful local contact point for the growing number of Austrian travellers heading to Iceland, particularly from Salzburg, Tyrol, and Upper Austria, and for the small Icelandic community in western Austria.
Service Area
The Salzburg honorary consulate general covers Upper Austria (Oberösterreich), Salzburg, Tyrol (Tirol), and Vorarlberg — essentially western Austria. Residents of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, and Carinthia are served by the Honorary Consulate in Vienna. For passport renewals, visa matters (for non-EEA nationals), and full consular services, both offices refer to the Embassy of Iceland in Vienna.
Appointment Information
The consulate holds public hours on Tuesday and Thursday from 09:00 to 12:00. For matters outside these hours, contact the office by phone or email to arrange an appointment.
