Overview
The Honorary Consul of Liechtenstein in Munich covers Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg — the two German federal states bordering Austria and, by extension, geographically closest to Liechtenstein. The post is held by Dr. Christian Waigel. Liechtenstein does not maintain a full consulate in southern Germany; the Embassy of Liechtenstein in Berlin is the competent mission for all substantive consular and diplomatic matters. Munich's proximity to the Liechtenstein border (roughly 200 km via motorway) makes this the most practical honorary consulate in Germany for citizens of both countries travelling through the region.
Consular Services
Limited to the scope of an honorary consulate: assisting Liechtenstein nationals in emergency situations, providing initial guidance on consular matters, and issuing confirmations for official purposes. Passport applications, visa processing, and notarial acts must be handled by the Embassy of Liechtenstein in Berlin.
Service Area
Bavaria (Bayern) and Baden-Württemberg. All substantive consular matters are handled by the Embassy of Liechtenstein in Berlin.
Appointment Information
Office hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00–16:00. Contact by phone in advance to confirm an appointment. Walk-in visits are not accepted.
Special Notes
Munich is the main air gateway for travellers to Liechtenstein from Germany — Munich Airport (MUC) connects to Feldkirch by direct regional train via Lindau, with onward PostBus to Vaduz in under 2 hours total. The Honorary Consul can provide practical orientation for visitors and Liechtenstein nationals transiting through Bavaria.
