Overview
The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Mali in Vienna is the sole Malian diplomatic presence on Austrian soil and serves as a local relay for the Malian Embassy in Berlin, which is formally accredited to Austria. Mali — the landlocked West African republic whose territory once hosted the medieval Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires and whose city of Timbuktu remains one of the most evocative names in world geography — maintains a modest but functionally important consular footprint in Central Europe through this Vienna office. The Honorary Consul is Mr. Mamadou Koné, appointed in April 2019. Austria and Mali share a surprisingly concrete economic link: Austrian exports to Mali amount to approximately 160 million euros annually, of which around 97 percent consists of cotton fabrics and embroideries produced in the Vorarlberg town of Lustenau, making Mali one of the largest single-country destinations for Austrian textile exports. The Austrian Development Agency (ADA) has funded projects in Mali, and Austrian military personnel have served in the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali). The Austrian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal covers Mali for Austrian consular services in the region.

The honorary consulate provides basic consular assistance to Malian nationals residing in or transiting through Austria. The consulate holds no authentication, passport, or visa authority — all such matters must be directed to the Embassy of Mali in Berlin. Services are limited to orientation, initial guidance, and liaison with the Berlin embassy for Malian citizens who need document processing, emergency travel documents, or consular protection.
