Overview
The Embassy of the Republic of Mali in Berlin is the principal Malian diplomatic mission in Central Europe, formally accredited to both Germany and Austria. Located on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin's Charlottenburg district, the embassy is headed by Ambassador Cheick Mahamadou Cherif (since March 2024). Mali — the vast landlocked West African republic whose territory stretches from the Saharan north to the tropical south, encompassing the middle course of the Niger River, the ancient trading city of Timbuktu, and the Bandiagara Escarpment of Dogon Country — maintains this Berlin mission as the hub for its consular and diplomatic activity across the German-speaking world. The embassy handles visa issuance, passport services, and document authentication for Malian nationals in Germany and Austria, as well as consular protection and community liaison. Germany is a significant bilateral partner for Mali through development cooperation, the EU Training Mission (EUTM Mali) to which Germany has been a major contributor, and trade ties. Mali also maintains three honorary consulates in Germany — in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, and Munich — providing regional relay points across the federal territory.
Visa Services
The visa section processes applications on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 and 12:00. Mali requires visas for most foreign nationals except citizens of ECOWAS member states. Applications require a completed form, valid passport, passport photographs, a yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for all travellers to Mali), and supporting documents depending on the visa category (invitation letter for business, hotel confirmation for tourism, mission order for official travel). Processing times vary. Austrian residents may apply at this Berlin embassy, as the Honorary Consulate in Vienna does not hold visa authority.
Consular Services
The embassy provides full consular services to Malian nationals in Germany and Austria: passport issuance and renewal, civil status registration (births, marriages, deaths), document legalisation and authentication, consular identity cards, and emergency travel documents. The embassy also serves as a point of registration for Malian citizens residing in Germany or Austria and can facilitate repatriation assistance in emergencies.
Service Area
The embassy's jurisdiction covers the entire Federal Republic of Germany and, by accreditation, the Republic of Austria. For local consular relay in Austria, Malian nationals can also contact the Honorary Consulate in Vienna, though it holds no visa, passport, or authentication authority. Three honorary consulates in Germany (Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich) provide additional regional access within German federal states.
