British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur

Embassy of UK in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Overview

The British embassy in Kuala Lumpur (officially the British High Commission under Commonwealth protocol — locally known and searched as the British embassy) occupies the upper floors of Menara Binjai in the city centre, two blocks from the Petronas Towers. It is the UK's main diplomatic post in Malaysia. Malaysia is consistently one of the largest non-EU sources of international students for UK universities, and a long-running Twinning Programme — UK degrees delivered locally at Malaysian campus partners (Heriot-Watt Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia, University of Reading Malaysia, Monash and others alongside dozens of UK-Malaysian university partnerships) — feeds a steady year-on-year flow of students using the Student route to complete final-year, master's or PhD studies in the UK. Alongside that student cohort, Skilled Worker applications from Malaysian professionals in finance, engineering, medicine and tech, family routes for established UK-Malaysian families, and a high volume of Standard Visitor applications shape the visa pattern (Malaysian passport holders are visa-free for short visits but family and business visitors with longer stays use the visa route). Applications are submitted online through UK Visas and Immigration on gov.uk; biometric enrolment is handled at VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. The embassy is a working mission rather than a public visa-decision counter — UK visa decisions are made centrally by UKVI hubs. Day-to-day work is the diplomatic representation of the UK to Malaysia plus consular assistance for British nationals on the ground: a sizeable expatriate community across KL, Penang, Johor Bahru and Sabah; British holiday travellers in Kuala Lumpur, the George Town heritage core in Penang, Langkawi, the Cameron Highlands, and the Borneo destinations of Kuching, Sandakan, Sepilok and Mount Kinabalu; British business travellers across the financial, oil-and-gas, palm-oil and electronics sectors. Public access is by appointment only and routine queries are routed through the FCDO online enquiry form. KL is one of Southeast Asia's busiest aviation hubs — direct daily flights from London Heathrow on Malaysia Airlines and onward connections from KLIA to most ASEAN cities make this a frequent-traveller post.

Visa Services

Malaysian applicants for UK visas use the UKVI online application route on gov.uk for visit, study (including the long-running Twinning Programme route into UK final-year and postgraduate study), Skilled Worker, and family categories. Applications are submitted and paid for online; biometrics are taken at VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. The British embassy in Kuala Lumpur does not accept applications or issue decisions — that work sits with UKVI hubs.

Consular Services

The British embassy in Kuala Lumpur serves British nationals across Malaysia, with priority on emergencies and people in vulnerable circumstances. Services include emergency travel documents for lost, stolen or expired passports; assistance after hospitalisation, arrest or detention; help following the death of a British national; notarial services within the FCDO published scope; and signposting to local English-speaking lawyers, doctors and translators. Routine passport renewals are handled through HM Passport Office online.

Trade & Export Support

UK-Malaysia trade is supported through the Department for Business and Trade network operating from the British embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce. Established sector relationships include education and training, finance and Islamic banking, oil and gas, electronics manufacturing, agritech and food and drink. The UK-Malaysia bilateral trade relationship has continued to grow following the UK's accession to CPTPP, of which Malaysia is a founding member.

Cultural & Educational Programs

Education is the largest pillar of the UK-Malaysia people-to-people relationship: tens of thousands of Malaysian students study in the UK each year, dozens of UK university campuses and partnership programmes operate in Malaysia, and the British Council Malaysia (offices in Kuala Lumpur and partner programmes nationwide) runs IELTS testing, English-language teaching and a year-round cultural programme. Chevening Malaysia is one of the larger Chevening cohorts globally.

Service Area

The British embassy in Kuala Lumpur covers the Federation of Malaysia, including Peninsular Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Malacca, the Cameron Highlands, Langkawi) and East Malaysia on Borneo (Kuching in Sarawak, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah). VFS Global UK Visa Application Centres operate in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Appointment Information

All in-person services are by appointment. Initial contact is via the FCDO online enquiry form linked from the embassy's gov.uk page; the 24-hour FCDO emergency number serves British nationals needing urgent consular help. Walk-in attendance is not offered.
