United States Embassy in Budapest

Embassy of USA in Budapest, Hungary

Overview

The U.S. Embassy in Budapest is the United States diplomatic mission in Hungary. The two countries are NATO allies and maintain broad bilateral cooperation in trade, security, education, and cultural exchange. Hungary is a popular destination for American tourists drawn to Budapest's thermal baths, Danube riverfront, ruin bars, and affordability compared to Western European capitals. The embassy occupies a prominent building on Szabadság tér (Freedom Square) in central Pest and serves both the resident American community and the large number of U.S. visitors passing through Hungary each year.

Visa Services

Hungary participates in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), so Hungarian citizens can travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa using an approved ESTA. The embassy processes all other visa categories, including student visas (F-1), work visas (H, L, O categories), and immigrant visas for residents of Hungary.

Consular Services

The American Citizen Services (ACS) unit provides passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial services, and emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Hungary. For after-hours emergencies, U.S. citizens can contact the embassy's duty officer or the State Department's Overseas Citizens Services at +1 202 501 4444.

Trade & Export Support

The U.S. Commercial Service at the embassy supports American companies entering or expanding in the Hungarian market and promotes U.S. exports. Key sectors include automotive manufacturing (several major U.S. firms operate plants in Hungary), information technology, shared services, and pharmaceuticals. The embassy works with the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary (AmCham) to connect U.S. businesses with local partners.

Investment Opportunities

The embassy promotes two-way investment. The SelectUSA programme encourages Hungarian firms to invest in the United States, while the Commercial Service supports the substantial existing U.S. corporate presence in Hungary, particularly in the automotive supply chain, shared services centres, and technology sectors.

Cultural & Educational Programs

The Public Affairs section manages the Fulbright exchange programme for academic exchange between the U.S. and Hungary, supports English-language teaching initiatives, and organises cultural events that connect American and Hungarian communities. The Central European University, originally founded in Budapest, remains a reference point for transatlantic academic ties.

Appointment Information

Appointments are mandatory for all consular and visa services and must be scheduled online via the embassy's website at hu.usembassy.gov. Plan ahead, especially for non-VWP visa categories where processing times may vary.

Special Notes

The embassy is a high-security facility on Szabadság tér in central Pest. Visitors are subject to screening and should allow extra time for entry. Large bags, electronics, and sharp objects may not be brought inside. Check the embassy website for current public holiday closures.
