Overview
Paraguayan nationals applying for a U.S. visa — tourist/business (B-1/B-2), student (F-1), immigrant, or other category — apply at the U.S. Embassy in Asunción. Paraguay is not on the Visa Waiver Program, so all Paraguayan nationals require a visa to enter the United States regardless of purpose. The embassy also provides consular services to U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Paraguay through its ACS unit. There is a sizable Paraguayan diaspora in the United States, making immigrant visa and family reunification processing a significant part of the consular workload.
Visa Services
The embassy processes all categories of nonimmigrant and immigrant visas for residents of Paraguay. Common categories include B-1/B-2 tourist/business, F-1 student, J-1 exchange, and immigrant visas for family reunification (immediate relative and preference petitions). Appointments are required for all visa interviews and must be booked online via the USTravelDocs portal.
Consular Services
The American Citizen Services (ACS) unit provides passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial services, and emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Paraguay. The unit serves the American community of residents, business professionals, and travellers.
Trade & Export Support
The embassy's Economic and Commercial sections work to promote U.S. exports and investment in Paraguay, with a focus on agriculture (Paraguay is one of the world's top soybean exporters), technology, and energy. They provide market intelligence and assistance for U.S. companies exploring the Paraguayan market.
Investment Opportunities
Paraguay offers investment opportunities in agribusiness, renewable energy (it generates significant hydroelectric power), real estate, and logistics. The country has one of South America's fastest-growing economies and a favourable tax environment. The embassy advises U.S. businesses on market entry and investment conditions.
Business Support
The embassy supports U.S. companies operating in or seeking to enter the Paraguayan market, advising on trade policy, investment conditions, and business regulations. Paraguay's low-tax economy and strategic location within Mercosur make it an entry point for the wider South American market.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The embassy's Public Affairs team manages cultural and educational exchange programmes, including the Fulbright scholarship programme for Paraguayan students and scholars, English language teaching initiatives, and cultural events. Asunción's historic Casco Histórico and the Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná (UNESCO World Heritage) are major visitor highlights.
Appointment Information
Appointments for all visa interviews and ACS services must be booked online via the USTravelDocs portal at ustraveldocs.com. Walk-in services are not available. The embassy is located at Mariscal Lopez Avenue in Asunción.
Special Notes
The embassy is at 1776 Mariscal Lopez Avenue, Asunción. Visitors are subject to security screening; electronic devices are prohibited inside the embassy compound. U.S. citizens travelling to Paraguay should review the current U.S. State Department travel advisory before visiting.
